Free Ways to Entertain the Kids This Summer

You don’t have to spend a lot to entertain the kids this summer!  Check out these free options in downtown Lima:

Children's Garden Lima, OhioThe Children’s Discovery Center at the Allen County Museum offers hands on activities with fun, historical themes.  The museum is free, although a $5/adult donation is suggested.  Located at the corner of Market and Metcalf Streets, the museum is open Tuesday – Friday, 1-5 pm, Sat-Sun, 1-4 pm. Closed Monday.

The beautiful and whimsical Children’s Garden is delightful for both the young and young at heart.  Maintained by volunteer master gardeners, it boasts over 30 mini gardens, including fairy tale themed garden beds.  Always free, the Children’s Garden is located next to the Allen County Museum on Market Street, and is open May through October, dawn to dusk.

Faurot Park Fountain Lima, OhioJust last year the Children’s Fountain at Faurot Park was renovated and is already a popular place for children on warm summer days.  The fountain includes a patio children can play on that spouts water in the air at regular intervals.  It’s open during park hours off of North Shore Drive.

The Lima Public Library has started its free Summer Reading Program.  Kids keep track of minutes read, and can enter a drawing for prizes for every 30 minutes of reading.  Sign-up at any library branch – events vary throughout the summer.

Free tennis lessons run June 14th through July 28th, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 am, at the Collett Street Recreation Area.  All players must attend by the 3rd session for lessons by pro Hanna Hager.

Teens might enjoy the following free events in downtown Lima this summer:

  • The Lima Astronomical Society will be open every Friday, at dusk, throughout June, July and August for anyone who wants to star gaze using the telescope at the observatory in Schoonover Park
  • Downtown Lima Photo Shoot Nights are for photographers of any skill level, with training by professional photography Jason Bowers.  June 9th, July 14th, and August 9th, 6 pm.
  • The Concerts in the Park series live music every Sunday night, June 26th – August 14th, 7 pm, at the Faurot Park Pavilion.

What other free activities do your kids love?  If we’ve missed any, add a comment and let us know!

About Jason Bowers:

“I graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1998 with a BS in Journalism and my concentration being Photojournalism. I worked as a photographer for several newspapers and transitioned into freelance work, discovering that I truly enjoyed working for myself. This education and real world experience eventually prepared me to develop my style of wedding photography in particular. In conjunction with the candid photojournalistic approach, I also try to incorporate some contemporary artistic elements as well. Over the years, because I’ve had opportunities to photograph so many interesting people, places, and events it’s hard for me to imagine doing anything else. I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to do what I enjoy for a living.”

Civic Center Takes Over Management of Downtown Parking Garage

Downtown Parking Garage
As you may or may not have heard, the Veterans Memorial Civic & Convention Center of Lima/Allen County has taken over the management of the Parking Garage on Market Street. Our staff is very excited to take on this new endeavor and look forward to serving you.
Over the next few months you will notice a few changes concerning the daily operations of the garage. At first, they will be subtle followed by more drastic/beneficial changes in June/early July. Please be patient during this time. It is our goal to operate the garage as an asset in the community and a place of convenience for one to park.
In mid-June, the largest change will be the installation of credit card accepting machines in 1 exit lane allowing for you to pay by cash or credit. This will allow for a much more effective way to serve the local traffic.

Rates
Monthly parking passes are available for $40 or $25 for students. Discounts available for monthly or annual payment.
Day rates range from $.50 to a max day rate of $3.50. Student rates per day are available, as well pre-purchase of validations for Downtown businesses to extend to their customers.

Please contact the VMCC for information on any of the above.

Rates for the parking garage have been set by the Joint Parking Commission.

Effect on Downtown Lima

Our goal is to make the parking garage a well-managed asset in our community. We are looking forward to the increased interaction with our Downtown Lima neighbors and encourage you to contact us with suggestions or concerns.
